Alliance Chat Room

Connecting Women Leaders and Future Women Leaders

The Alliance Chat Room is a secure, informal chat room where our Central Asian partners can sign in with a password and have a live, unscheduled “chat” (i.e. instant message exchange) with either our volunteers or with each other for the purpose of exchanging ideas and information, sharing experiences, practicing English, mentoring, or simply having a cultural exchange with a woman in a different country. We will be offering the Alliance Chat Room to women and girls affiliated with our partner organizations in Afghanistan, Kazakhstan and Mongolia.

Chat Room Volunteers

To be eligible, volunteers must have professional, teaching, academic or political skills to share with women leaders in Central Asia as well as excellent English writing skills.

Volunteers must be 18 or older.

For the safety of our Afghan participants, we are only able to work with women volunteers at this time. Many of the Afghan women and girls in our program come from families or communities who do not approve of them speaking with men who are not family members - even long distance.

We would like to have as many Alliance volunteers as possible and in as many time zones as possible before we open the Chat Room. This will increase the chances that our Central Asian partners will find someone on-line when they sign into the Chat Room. Although there is no time commitment and no scheduling (volunteers and partners simply sign into the Chat Room whenever it is convenient for them), we are hoping that our volunteers sign into the Chat Room as often as possible to check to see if our Central Asian partners are on-line.

Please be aware that during the first few months, the Chat Room will be sparsely populated as it will take time to get all our Central Asian and Afghan partner organizations’ members signed in and on-line. So, please be patient if the Chat Room is rather quiet for the first few months – we anticipate that the number of participants will grow exponentially with each passing month.

Also, as a pilot program there may be some initial bugs to work out as we roll out the Chat Room. During the first few months we will be gauging the actual amount of use and number of participants. We may also need to work through a few technology issues. So, please be bear with us during the pilot phase!

In order to respect the Afghan culture and to ensure the comfort and safety of the Afghan women and girls who will be participating in the Chat Room, we are currently opening Alliance Chat to only female volunteers.

January 2010 Update: We are sorry, but we are not able to accept further Chat Room Volunteers at this time.
